Getting enough water is important to your health. Plain water has zero calories and can help manage body weight and prevent dehydration.

You likely already know how important it is to stay hydrated, especially during the summer when temperatures soar. Although any non-caffeinated drink helps prevent dehydration (as well as some foods, such as watermelon), one of the best options is to drink plain ol’ water. If you don’t like the taste of water, try these tips to add flavor and fun to make water taste better.

Your body uses water for almost everything it does. It’s important for healthy skin, hair and nails. It also helps regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, flush waste and reproduce cells. In fact, water makes up approximately 60% of the adult human body.

Unfortunately, the lack of taste in water, and the many drink options vying for our attention on store shelves, cause many people to choose drinks filled with empty calories, sugar, or sugar substitutes and artificial ingredients. But here are some ways to jazz up water, so you make a healthier drink choice that still tastes good, looks appealing and quenches your thirst.

5 Ways to Make Water Taste Better

1. Add slices of lemon, lime or orange. They add refreshing taste and make your glass look inviting.

2. Infuse water with fresh berries, pineapple or melon. Also, you can freeze bits of fruit in ice cube trays for a more subtle flavor and an interesting look.

3. Slice cucumbers and add to water for a fresh, clean taste.

4. Enhance water with fresh mint leaves, basil, ginger, rosemary or cilantro.

5. Drink sparkling water or seltzer if you prefer some fizz. It’s still calorie-free but is thirst-quenching and provides a welcome change from flat water.
