Typically, I share video projects on this blog. In 2016, I’ve been able to meet some really interesting people who have beautiful stories of perseverance, determination, and strength through hard times.

Our team has written so many great posts this year about our amazing patients and doctors. As 2016 comes to an end, I look back at a couple of my favorites.

My favorite post to write in 2016 was about the UVA Adoption Clinic. I gained a new perspective on the adoption process and why the clinic is so valuable.

One great thing about this year is that, as editor of Healthy Balance, I got to read and write about interesting topics (school recess, parenting styles, allergy-free school lunches) and patients who have overcome incredible barriers.

Pam Barile suffered a massive stroke due to a brain aneurysm. The outlook didn't look good but with the support of her family, friends and medical team at UVA, Pam was able to beat the odds and make an inspiring recovery.

Researchers at UVA have developed a device that may help patients like Lauren who live with Type 1 diabetes. The device known as the Artificial Pancreas helps to monitor and regulate blood sugar in patients.
